Johnson & Johnson - Merging of
McNeil Labs and Ortho Labs
UA's role was to help the leadership of the Robert Wood Johnson
Pharmaceutical Research Institute (which cut across both McNeil and
Ortho) deal with organizational climate issues and to provide
facilitation in a strategic planning process. Prior to working with UA,
Johnson & Johnson did not choose to focus much attention in aligning
two vastly different cultures and, as a result, had long-term
difficulties in this area.
Abbott Laboratories - Santa Clara
(Involving approximately 1,000 employees)
Abbott - Santa Clara is a hematology instrument and re-agent plant
that was acquired by Abbott approximately 6 years ago. The senior
management team is now comprised of both long-term Abbott employees as
well as employees that remained after the acquisition. The current
site manager assumed his role in the past year. He is the first career
Abbott site manager at this location. Prior to beginning his new role,
he was on the senior management team at another Abbott site in Dallas
that UA assisted with strategic planning efforts in 1995-1996. UA was
brought into the Santa Clara site to help develop a strategic focus
and strategic alignment. This effort is moving in a positive
direction.
Abbott Laboratories - Puerto Rico
Operations
(Involving approximately 4,800 employees)
Abbott - Puerto Rico's complex includes two chemical plants of
approximately 600 and 1,000 employees respectively. The complex also
includes a pharmaceutical plant with 1,200 employees and a diagnostic
re-agent plant with over 2,000 employees. This has been a strategic
planning driven project that is affecting a very significant
organizational culture change. Historically, Abbott Laboratories has
globally divided its corporation into individually managed companies
or divisions. The project in Puerto Rico is bringing about alignment
and integration in many core functions across division lines. As a
first for Abbott, this should derive significant economies. This
project is progressing extremely well and has the attention of Abbott
Corporate in the Chicago area.
